President's Message

As I reflect on being President again during a time of uncertainty, it is so hard to believe that so far this pandemic has taken 800,000 lives. The Biennial 46th Convention was held in November in Indianapolis; I was able to attend the convention virtually from the safety of my own home. It was the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing by the 6 founders, which received their 100th Anniversary award. Remarkably, reported at the convention there were a total of 33 new chapters formed, 6 outside of the United States which shows: strength, a sense of hope, and endurance of belonging to a professional nursing honor society even during a pandemic.

There were 122 Key Awards awarded in 5 global areas for 2019-2021. Our chapter was one of the twelve recipients to be awarded and recognized for receiving the Fourth Key Award for our Chapter. I listened to the new President Kenneth Dion’s message Call to Action about “Be Bold” which highlighted three essential elements—economics, technology, and conservation. As I contemplated on these elements during our current situation, this is how I have interpreted these words. We all have become very bold in how we approach every aspect of our lives. Certainly, through economics, several people have lost their employment or needed to change their employment to stay home and take care of their children. Thank goodness for technology that everyone can connect with family, friends, and colleagues on a regular basis via Zoom meetings. Having conservation and communication is essential during these uncertain times to keep everyone informed as things continue to change in our world. Nurses today daily are being bold by providing excellent nursing care in a professional, caring, comforting manner. So, let us join in on the President’s Call to Action to continue as a chapter membership to Be Bold as a bright beaming beacon upholding our mission and values of love, courage, and honor. We can only hope that 2022 will be a turning point in this pandemic. I look forward to another exciting year ahead as we embark on our 34th year as a chapter and to “seeing” you on Zoom at our upcoming CEU events. Please stay safe and remember to take care of yourself.

Karawa Nursing School Support

CONGO CLINIC INITIATIVE

Supporting Nursing Education in Karawa

Nurses are the backbone of Congo’s health care. After graduation, Nurses go on to work in either a hospital or a clinic run by the Congo Evangelical Covenant Church. Many nurses function as independent practitioners, running clinics with physician oversight only once per month.

Students are supported solely by their families who often work as subsistence farmers. Education costs often become burdensome, causing students drop out. Those who persevere do so are challenged to pay their tuition, go without food, study without electricity, and rely on memory. Students pay $300.00 to $500.00 per year towards their education, but it does not cover the complete costs, such as books. These are passionate men and women, with a desire to impact their community.

By supporting Nursing education, you will help keep these hardworking students in school, support school resources, and change communities for generations to come. Your gift to nursing education will help strengthen these schools with curriculum, professors, and much needed support. One of our previous gifts supported solar lightening in the nursing dormitory, as previously the students were studying with kerosene lamps.

Salem Covenant Church in Worcester, MA. has a Free Evening Medical Clinic, the Greenwood Street Clinic whose Executive Director is Dr. Karin Ciance. Dr. Ciance advocates for nurses to be educators, a friend of the poor, the homeless, the stranger, the suffering and be a glimmer of hope to assist those in need.

Thank you in advance for your generosity. Checks should be made mailed to: Karin Ciance Anna Maria College Box M 50 Sunset Lane, Paxton, MA. 01612. Please note your check memo as: Paul Carlson Partnership.
